It takes sponsors to help fund and support a major film festival. Sponsors that back a solid festival help support the mission of the film festival and are also supporting the community at large.
The Tribeca Film Festival in particular is an important event for New York City because it helps connect lovers of film with the folks involved with the creation of those films; whether it be the Actors, Directors and Producers.
I love the Tribeca Film Festival because even though there is so much going on in New York, this one event not only captures the hearts and minds of New York, it also garners the attention of the nation in much the same way that the Sundance Film Festival does, or even SXSW (South by Southwest.)
As a reporter, it is a little harder to cover than some of the other Film Festivals because it is so spread out over many locations across the city. But few festivals are able to bring such high quality content to so many neighborhoods.
I never felt that the Tribeca Film Festival was exclusionary or really just for industry people. I feel this way in part because many of the events are free to the public. Tribeca as an institution exists to create an event that makes you proud to live in New York or even just proud to visit.
We need national events that make us proud to be Americans. Tribeca is tips on my list. This is probably the most important film festival in America. It's amazing what Jane Rosenthal, Robert DeNiro, The amazing publicity team at Rubenstein, and everyone at the Tribeca Institute have been able to accomplish over the last 10 years.
If you agree with me, please take a looks at the sponsor list and thank them for helping support the things that you like. That's my plan anyway.
