The REEL Truth is the essential book for anyone hoping to break into independent film – a step-by-step guide to dodging dozens of landmines on the road to festival glory. The book is also an entertaining consumer title for anyone who loves movies and wants to know more about the challenges even the most successful indie films (Juno, Swingers, Boys Don’t Cry, Shallow Grave, The King of Kong, Election, Open Water and many others) faced on their way to the silver screen.
In conversations with leading executives from Fox Searchlight, Miramax, Sony Pictures Classics, Lionsgate, Cinetic Media and others, as well as with indie icons such as Danny Boyle, Christine Vachon, Doug Liman, Barbara Kopple, Ken Burns, Darren Aronofsky, Werner Herzog, and Kim Peirce, author Reed Martin filled The REEL Truth with literally 550-pages of frank advice from the pros for the aspiring screenwriter, producer, or future director in everyone’s family. The book provides a uniquely realistic discussion of what they need to do—and more importantly, what not do—before asking friends and family members to finance their dream.
The REEL Truth also includes advice for working professionals, from essential tips on keeping budgets down to up-to-the-minute sections on new and emerging exhibition platforms such as SnagFilms.com, Amazon’s CreateSpace, Xbox LIVE, and the re-launched, official BitTorrent.com. Additionally, The REEL Truth examines new technologies and gives the YouTube, Blu-ray, and D.I.Y. mavericks of tomorrow a realistic approach to showcasing and monetizing their work.
Publishers Weekly calls The REEL Truth “informative and very entertaining,” while Sony Pictures Classics (Rudo y Cursi, Paris 36) co-president Tom Bernard says “this book is indispensable.” American Cinematographer says The REEL Truth “is similar in both scope and quality to Gregory Goodell’s excellent Independent Feature Film Production” and “provides the most up-to-date guide readers could want with its combination of detailed legal, aesthetic and technical advice.”
