NEW YORK, NY – The gripping, down and dirty political documentary STREET FIGHT opens in New York on Wednesday, February 22, 2006. STREET FIGHT makes its theatrical debut at the IFC Film Center, 323 Sixth Avenue at W. 3rd Street.
A true story revealing the underbelly of politics, power, and race in America, STREET FIGHT chronicles the bare-knuckles Mayoral campaign in Newark, N.J. between newcomer Cory Booker, a 32 year-old Rhodes Scholar/Yale Law School graduate, and four-term incumbent Sharpe James, the undisputed champion of New Jersey politics.
STREET FIGHT captures a rarely seen style of politics that is not about spin-doctors, media consultants, or photo-ops. In Newark, we discover, elections are won and lost in the streets. The Mayoral battle pits Booker against an old-school political machine that uses any means necessary to crush its opponents: city workers who do not support the mayor are demoted; "disloyal" businesses are targeted by code enforcement; a campaigner is detained and accused of terrorism; and disks of voter data are burglarized in the night. Even the filmmaker is dragged into the slugfest, and by Election Day, the climate becomes so heated that the Federal government is forced to send in observers to watch for cheating and violence.
STREET FIGHT sheds light on important questions of democracy, power and, in a surprising twist, race. Both Booker and James are African-American Democrats, but when Mayor Jones accuses the Ivy League educated Booker of not being "really black" it forces voters to examine how we define race in this country.
STREET FIGHT was written and directed by Marshall Curry, and was executive produced by Liz Garbus and Rory Kennedy. STREET FIGHT has received several honors, including the Tribeca Film Festival’s Audience Award.
STREET FIGHT will be released in New York on February 22 and in Los Angeles on February 24.
