DALLAS, April 10 -- When the Golden Globe-nominated drama "Bobby" is released on DVD today, Blockbuster (NYSE: BBI)(NYSE: BBI.B) will be the exclusive rental resource for the powerhouse cast film directed by Emilio Estevez. As a result of an alliance between Blockbuster and independent film studio The Weinstein Company, special footage recounting the life of Robert F. Kennedy is available only on Blockbuster DVD rentals as a bonus for movie lovers.
"The Life & Times of Robert F. Kennedy," twenty minutes of inspiring footage, tells the story of Robert F. Kennedy's public and private life, as well as how he became one of the greatest champions for civil rights in American history. Found exclusively in the Special Features section on Blockbuster rental DVDs, the featurette showcases the film's director Emilio Estevez as well as Martin Sheen and Harry Belafonte.
"Bobby" is part of a four-year alliance that provides Blockbuster with exclusive U.S. rental rights to The Weinstein Company's theatrical and direct- to-video movies. Other recent Weinstein Company releases made available exclusively for rent through Blockbuster include the Dixie Chicks documentary "Shut Up & Sing" and the comedy "School for Scoundrels," starring John Heder and Billy Bob Thornton.
All Weinstein Company releases are available to both BLOCKBUSTER® store members and to BLOCKBUSTER Total Access™ members. BLOCKBUSTER Total Access gives subscribers to Blockbuster's online rental service the option of returning their DVDs in the mail or exchanging them at a participating BLOCKBUSTER store for free in-store movie rentals.
The recipient of a seven-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival, "Bobby" revisits the night Robert F. Kennedy was gunned down at the Ambassador Hotel in 1968. The story is about how the lives of those at the hotel that night intersected and takes place against the backdrop of the cultural issues gripping the country at the time.
The film stars a celebrity ensemble cast including Anthony Hopkins, Demi Moore, Sharon Stone, Elijah Wood, Lindsay Lohan, William H. Macy, Emilio Estevez and his father Martin Sheen. Helen Hunt, Laurence Fishburne, Heather Graham, Harry Belafonte and Ashton Kutcher are among others who appear.
Other upcoming exclusive rentals include "Miss Potter," the Beatrix Potter biopic starring Renee Zellweger and Ewan McGregor; the Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez double feature "Grindhouse;" the hilarious animated family adventure "Arthur & The Invisibles" and Steven King's haunted hotel room thriller "1408" starring John Cusack.
