I met Christie George at a recent New York Cine Woman meeting who told me about a film that she was working on. The Grace Lee Project. Christie works for Woman Make Movies. Women Make Movies is the world's leading distributor of independent films by and about women.
She explained to me that Korean American filmmaker Grace Lee, from Missouri filmed a documentary about a subject that I might not be aware of. The subject of the name "Grace Lee".
I said, "she shot a documentary about herself?".
"Sort of", Christie replied.
It turns out that the name Grace Lee is a common name given to Asian American girls. Award winning filmmaker Grace Lee sets out to cement a myth about all women named Grace Lee, then spin that myth back on itself.
"Grace Lee" is a common name. And now it's also a film about many uncommon women. If you like the trailer, I urge you to go see this cool, funny, American film.
